Our Story

Meet the Namesake: Scott Shelton

In 1974, high school sophomore Scott Shelton started a small lawn care business with a simple goal: work hard, be outdoors, and earn his own money. He began by knocking on doors at local apartment complexes, and after gaining a few accounts, reinvested everything into a trailer, mowers, and the basic tools he needed to grow. With the help of a couple of friends after school, the foundation of the company was built on hard work, reliability, and pride in every job.

After graduating, Scott continued his education in horticulture at St. Louis Community College–Meramec while steadily growing the business. What started as a part-time job, quickly became his full-time focus, fueled largely by word of mouth—neighbors recommending him to neighbors. That trust became the backbone of the company and remains at the heart of what we do today.

As the business grew, so did our services. Simply mowing lawns quickly expanded into full property care, including shrub trimming, mulching, fertilization, and general maintenance. Snow removal was added to better serve customers year-round, followed by landscaping and retaining wall construction as demand continued to grow.

Over the years, we’ve built dedicated crews who take the same pride in their work as Scott did from the very beginning. Finding and keeping great people has always been one of the most important parts of our success, and we’ve worked hard to build a team that shares our values and treats every property with the same level of care and respect.

In the early days, the business operated out of Scott’s home. In 2000, he purchased the company’s first building in Sunset Hills—a major milestone. Just a few years later, in 2006, a fire destroyed the building and much of the equipment. It was a difficult chapter, but it also became a turning point. With determination and resilience, Scott rebuilt—constructing a new, larger facility in Arnold that continues to support our growing team today.

Today

In 2023, Scott passed the torch to longtime employee Clay Deschler, a graduate of Kansas State University with a degree in Landscape Architecture. Under Clay’s leadership, the company continues to grow while staying true to the values it was built on about 50 years ago.

Today, Shelton Landscape & Maintenance offers a full range of outdoor services. As an experienced, accredited and licensed business backed by multiple product manufacturers, we bring trusted expertise to every project, along with a hands-on, detail-oriented approach from start to finish.

From custom outdoor lighting and decks, to outdoor living spaces complete with kitchens and pools, our goal is simple: to create spaces where families can relax, gather, and make lasting memories at home.

Nearly five decades later, we’re still a locally owned and operated business built on the same principles that started it all—hard work, honesty, and treating our customers like neighbors. Because to us, that’s exactly who you are.
